Preparation for Long-Distance Shifts
In long shifts, your arm, hand, and fingers work together. As you move higher on the violin,
your hand moves around the instrument, and your left elbow naturally shifts slightly to the right.
If this happens too late, tension can build. Instead, prepare the movement in advance.
A small, early motion of the elbow makes the shift smoother, easier, and more natural.
With good preparation, a shift can feel almost effortless—more like a release than a push.
This brings greater ease, control, and fluidity to your playing.
